Skincare in the winter can be tricky. I live in New Jersey, where each year we’re never quite sure what stepping outside will bring.
Lately, it’s been quite dry and very cold. Here is what my skin and I have been loving…
Once, while listening intently to a beauty podcast, I heard a French beauty editor say that the most common misconception women have about skincare is that they must wash their face first thing in the morning. She spoke on how women in France rarely wash their face in the morning. Rather, they rely on the oils created by their skin during the night help to lay the foundation for hydration during the day. I’m not so sure about that, but I have enjoyed using the extra time in the morning I would have spent washing my face doing other things, without any breakouts to speak of.
My morning skincare is solely focused on maintaining hydration and sun-defense, and it’s really rather simple.
First, I apply a gentle essence on a cotton round all over the face. Be sure to find an essence that’s free of alcohol and harsh ingredients. As it’s the first product to be applied, it should be gentle. The one I love (pictured below) is perfect for those with a more sensitive exterior.
Afterwards I apply my moisturizer all over the face. I make sure to always purchase one that contains an SPF of 30 or higher. Sun protection in the winter is just as important as it is during the summer. I finish off my routine with a firming eye cream, patted into my under-eye area and around my brow bone using the tip of my ring finger. I choose a firming eye cream in the morning because I am prone to puffiness, no matter how many hours of sleep I get.
The sole focus of my nightly skincare routine is cleaning, balancing, and treating. I find it so important to go to sleep with clean skin, since I purposely don’t wash my face in the mornings. Enter the double-cleanse.
First, I remove my makeup with an oil cleanser. I cannot stress enough: do not be afraid of an oil cleanser. You’d be surprised at how well they breakdown makeup without breaking out your face! I alternate between two different ones depending on how much makeup I’ve worn that day and how my skin feels. Both of them do a great job of gently removing all traces of makeup from my face. I follow up with a gentle cleanser, which helps to prepare my skin for the rest of my routine. I dabble between this one and this one.
One my skin is clean and refreshed, I use a gentle toner on a small amount on a cotton round and swipe it over my face. Using a toner balances the skin’s pH, and removes any further impurities without drying out my skin.
After toning my skin, I apply Young Living’s Pure Frankincense Oil all over the face. I love using this for assistance with fine lines and brightening. It smells divine, and not enough people know about its benefits for skin support. Disclaimer: Not all essential oils are created equal, so be sure that you’ve done your research.
I finish off my routine with a few drops of a gentle serum, a thin layer of night cream, and a few dots of a brightening eye cream, patted into my under-eye area and around my brow bone using the tip of my ring finger.
